As a Gradual Modularity Engineer on the Product Infrastructure team, you’ll be helping to think through the problems of large Rails monoliths that contain all of the domain complexities associated with small and medium size businesses like Benefits, Payroll, and HR. This role is all about thinking how we can create system structure at scale that helps us grow our domain and product offerings. This will involve creating and building on technologies that help establish boundaries in our large Rails monoliths. It will also include evangelizing this tooling and helping support teams working to adopt new patterns and best practices in a mature, complex system. You will be tasked with strategizing on how to create a more modular system, and while also executing on high-leverage, concrete work required to untangle and decouple complex domains from one another.

The Product Infrastructure team supports the rest of Gusto engineering by giving them a solid foundation upon which to build their domain complexities. This team exists to help multiply the impact of product engineers and builds tools for the entire engineering organization

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
  • Find and act on opportunities to improve tooling around building modular software systems in Ruby on Rails
  • Work with and support teams who are building modular systems, including understanding the domains they work in as well as building out tooling that better meets their needs
  • Building out and executing on strategies to untangle our monoliths
  • Creating technical and conceptual boundaries between software systems via clean interfaces and explicit dependencies

Here’s what we’re looking for:
  • 4+ years of experience with software development and architecture
  • Excitement about clean interfaces, explicit dependency management, and thoughtful and empathetic leadership around helping software systems scale
  • Experience and/or interest in building tooling that makes your engineering colleagues successful, especially tooling that helps create modularity and structure at scale in software systems
  • Experience and/or interest in Ruby, Rails, architecture, developer tooling
  • Great communicator: We regularly make changes to how product engineers work, and must be able to effectively plan, document, consult, and collaborate with them. The ability to use anecdotes and data to illustrate the impact of your work.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $110,000/yr to $187,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $140,000/yr to $234,000/yr for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.
